August 1922. American journalist Jerry Thompson, traveling to the country of the Soviets, arrives in Azerbaijan. He also visits the Mardakan settlement of Baku. Here he meets an elderly man in his summer house. Thompson cannot believe what he is hearing. In front of him is Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev, who was once a major oil producer, millionaire and philanthropist, but lost all his wealth after the establishment of Soviet power. Haji was telling the guest the story of his life path from a simple builder to an influential oil industrialist.
January 1873. Haji Zeynalabdin, a successful contractor, wealthy family head and philanthropist, acquires a plot of land for oil production in the Bibiheybat settlement. Baku lives in anticipation of the oil boom. Small oil fountains are gushing in Absheron. Haji spends all his time with great hopes in search of areas that could have large oil reserves. But after 4 years, the scene in the field disappoints him - despite all efforts, there is still no oil...

The working title of the film was "The Protector". The film is the 1st film in a 4-part series.

The series, which consists of 4 films, had a 15-month preparation period, a 9-month shooting period, and 135 shooting days. The artistic team prepared sketches of costumes and outfits for more than 150 main characters, more than 400 types of clothing, and 100 accessories - jewelry. Various products were obtained along with costumes, headdresses, boots, and sandals made by craftsmen from different regions of the country in accordance with the era. Shirts and belts brought from Turkey, jewelry and accessories purchased from an Indian exhibition and kept in private collections were rented and added to the base. 1,600 costumes from the costume and props department of the "Azerbaijanfilm" film studio entered the costume workshop of the film. During the filming, 3,600 people were dressed and their costumes were designed according to the script. The film was shot in more than 70 locations and more than 300 sets were created.
