Nikolay Shengelaya was born in the village of Obuzhi, Kutaisi province, Georgia.
He studied at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Tbilisi University.
He worked in cinema since 1924, and made his first film in 1927.
Honored Artist of Russia (1935), laureate of the USSR State Prize (1941), Nikolay Shengelaya died in Tbilisi in 1943.
