Hokuma Gurbanova (Hokuma Alakbarova-Gurbanova) was born in Baku.
She studied at the Baku Pedagogical Technical School (1931), and in the piano class of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1931-1932).
She worked at the Baku Turkish Workers' Theater. In 1932, when the Workers' Theater was moved to Ganja, she also went to Ganja. In 1939, she forever tied her fate to the Drama Theater. There has never been a second female artist in our theater history who could play with such beautiful voice variations as her. She could “freeze” on stage for minutes like a marble monument. She “filled” the pauses with her gaze and movements.
As a pioneer of dubbing, she voiced the role of Anka in the 1937 dubbed feature film “Chapayev” in Azerbaijani.
She starred in the Tajik-made film “Habib-the Tamer of the Snakes” (1972, directed by Anvar Turayev).
She was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Azerbaijan SSR for two convocations. Honored Artist (1943), People's Artist (1960), People's Artist of the USSR (1965) Hokuma Gurbanova died in 1988 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
Actress Hokuma Gurbanova is the mother of actress Vafa Fatullayeva.
Actress Hokuma Gurbanova was the wife of actor Alasgar Alakbarov and artist Nusrat Fatullayev.
