Ali Gurbanov was born in Tbilisi.
He began his acting career in 1914 in the Tbilisi amateur theater troupe. For the first time, at the insistence of Mohsun Sanani, he appeared on stage with only one word - "let's go" in the play "Gaveyi-Ahangar". In 1915, he attracted attention by playing the role of Rustam bey in the play "Mashadi Ibad", prepared at the initiative of Mohsun Sanani. After this event, he began to be invited not only to drama performances, but also to operas, operettas and musicals, both as an artist and a tar player. In 1917, he was invited to the "Ittihad" theater troupe organized in Tbilisi. With the "Ittihad" troupe, he performed in the works "Unfortunate Young Man" (Old Villager) and "Fairy Witch" (Niyaz). From 1918, he continued his activities in the "Ibret" drama society. The Tbilisi Theater, which operated as a troupe until 1921, was transformed into the Tbilisi State Azerbaijan Drama Theater in the same year, and he has been an actor of the theater since then.
In 1925, he was invited to the Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theater together with the actors of the Tbilisi Theater. During his more than 50 years of activity, he performed about 200 different roles on the big stage, playing some roles several hundred times. For example, he performed the role of Vidadi 700 times, the roles of Azizbeyov and Haji Ahmed more than 350 times, and he played the role of Niyaz many times in various productions of "Peri Cadu", where he was the only performer.
Honored Artist (1938), People's Artist (1940) Ali Gurbanov died in 1962.
