Zulfugar Rufatoghlu (Zulfugar Ahmadzadeh) was born in Baku.

He studied at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Foreign Languages ​​(1975–1980).

In 1985, he began his journalistic activity in the magazine "Azerbaijani Woman". He worked in the newspaper "Sovet Kendi" (1986), "Kommunist" (1987). He was one of the founders of the newspaper "Saher", which was a supplement to the newspaper "Kommunist" and was published in 1989. He worked in the newspapers "Xalg gazeti" and "Azerbaijan" at various times. In 1990, he became the youngest department head of the newspaper "Kommunist". His articles on linguistics were published in the magazine "Science and Life" (1980–1994). In 1993, he studied at the courses of the "Reuter" agency. Since December 1994, he has been working in the BBC Azerbaijani service. He was the first Azerbaijani journalist to visit Armenia, Shusha and Khankendi after the start of the Karabakh war in 1996. After this visit, a 10-part series of radio essays "In the Shadow of the Ceasefire" was created. In 2000–2001, he worked as a producer for the BBC Azerbaijan service. Later, he became one of the main correspondents for BBC Azerbaijan. During his time there, he created weekly programs called "A Difficult Question" and "Your Voice". In 2014, he fell seriously ill and fell into a coma. After that, he worked as an independent journalist.

The book "Blue-eyed Stepmother" was published (2019). He composed many song lyrics.

Zulfugar Rufatoghlu, winner of the Golden Pen Award (1991), died in 2024 in a hospital in London where he was receiving treatment, and was buried there in the "Firdaus Garden" cemetery.

Journalist Zulfugar Rufatoghlu is the son of poet and writer Rufat Ahmadzadeh.
