Zakir Baghirov was born in Shusha.

He studied at the Piano class of the Workers' Faculty of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1932), at the Music Technical School of the Moscow State Conservatory (1935), and at the Theory and Composition Faculty of the Moscow State Conservatory (1945-1949).

In 1941-1945, he participated in the Great Patriotic War, served in Austria, Hungary, Romania, Finland, and Manchuria.

He served as the artistic director of the Azerbaijan Radio and Television Broadcasting Committee (1950-1958), the artistic director of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic (1963-1965), and the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Azerbaijan Music Foundation, and worked as a teacher at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1949-1996) and head of the Department of Music Theory (1970-1980). He is the author of the operas "Aygun" (1972), "Old Khattabich", the operettas "Song of Our Village" (1958), "Mother-in-law" (1974), suites for folk instrument orchestra (1956, 1969), a concert for piano and orchestra (1970), other chamber-instrumental works, songs and romances. He wrote music for performances and films.

Professor (1978), Honored Artist (1960) Zakir Baghirov died in 1996.
