Yashar Garayev was born in Sheki. In 1946, his family moved to Baku.

He studied at the Philology Faculty of Azerbaijan State University (1954-1958).

He worked as a senior laboratory assistant (1959), junior research worker, senior research worker, head of the theory and literary process department (1975-1981), deputy director for scientific affairs (1981-1985), and director at the Nizami Institute of Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences. Since 1991, he has been working as the secretary of the Azerbaijan Writers' Union for criticism and literary studies. He began his literary work in 1955. His works on classics, modern literary process, theatrical art, science, and aesthetics in the press have attracted the attention of the literary community. His books have been published. He is the author of 38 monographic research works and collections of literary and critical articles, and more than 500 articles.

Critic, literary critic, Doctor of Philological Sciences (1980), professor (1985), laureate of the State Prize (1980), Honored Scientist (1982), corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (2001). Yashar Garayev died in 2002 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
