Suleyman Alasgarov was born in Shusha.

He studied at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1943-1948).

He worked as a conductor of the folk instruments orchestra at the Republican Radio Broadcasting Committee (1943), chief conductor and head of the music section of the Azerbaijan State Musical Comedy Theater (1944–1948), artistic director of the cinema orchestras of the Cinematography Committee (1949–1951), artistic director of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Song and Dance Ensemble (1951–1952), director of the Baku Musical Technical School named after Asaf Zeynalli (1952–1954), head of the Department of Art Affairs of the Ministry of Culture (1954–1956), director and chief conductor of the Azerbaijan State Musical Comedy Theater (1960–1971), head and professor of the Department of Folk Music and Folk Instruments at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1971–1998), and head of the Karabakh branch of the Azerbaijan Composers' Union (1972-2000).

The operetta genre occupies a central place in his work. He has operettas, operas, cantatas, symphonies, symphonic mugham, symphonic poems and suites, tar concerts, up to 200 songs and romances, and other works.

Honored Artist (1960), People's Artist (1974), laureate of the Uzeyir Hajibeyov Republican Prize (1967), and the "Shohrat" Order (1999), Suleyman Alasgarov died in 2000 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
