Rza Afganli (Rza Jafarzadeh) was born in the city of Sarab in South Azerbaijan.

He was orphaned at the age of two. In order to support his family, he came to Baku in 1912. In 1916, he went to the city of Pyatigorsk and worked at the railway station - transporting goods and making shoes. In 1920, he returned to Baku. He got a job in the oil fields. At the same time, he became a member of the drama club in the Sabunchu settlement. He started working at the Central State Mobile Theater. In 1923, he was hired by the troupe of the National Drama Theater (1923-1929). At the same time, he studied at the Baku Theater Technical School (1923-1926). In 1929, he went to work at the Tbilisi Azerbaijan State Theater (1929-1933). He was the chief director of the Ashgabat Theater of Few Nations (1933-1934). Then he returned to Baku and continued his work at the State Drama Theater (1935-1963). In 1963, he was unjustly dismissed from the theater. He remained unemployed for many years (he starred in several films in between). For a while, he acted at the Sumgayit State Drama Theater (1970-1973).

Honored Artist (1938), People's Artist (1943), USSR State Prize Laureate (1948) Rza Afganli died in 1973.
