Rauf Mammadov was born in Ganja.
He studied at the Ganja Agricultural Academy (1973-1975) and the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in the field of directing (1980-1985).
Since 1996, he has also worked as an artist and photographer. He makes documentaries for Russian television channels. He is the director of the Russian-produced films "Island of Dead Ships" (1987) and "Ruan the Cat" (1989).
