Rasim Afandiyev was born in Gazakh. He studied at the Azerbaijan State Art School named after Azim Azimzadeh (1944-1950), and at the Faculty of Art Theory and History of the Leningrad State Art Institute named after Repin (1950-1955).
He began his career in 1955 as the head of the Azerbaijani and Eastern Art Department at the Azerbaijan State Art Museum. Since 1965, he has worked at the Institute of Architecture and Art of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences as a junior research worker (1965-1969), senior research worker (1969-1984), head of department and deputy director (1984-1995), and director (1996-2010).
He defended his candidate's dissertations in 1961 and his doctoral dissertations in 1972. In 1989, he was elected a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and in 2001, a full member. He has more than 30 books and more than 200 articles dedicated to various areas of Azerbaijani material culture and folk art. He made important contributions to the discovery of our art monuments preserved in museums and collections around the world.
Academician (2001), Professor, Doctor of Art History, laureate of the "Shohrat" Order (2004), Rasim Efendiyev died in 2010.
