The Tofig Ahmadov Variety Symphony Orchestra began its activities as a small variety ensemble within the Azerbaijan State Television and Radio since 1956. The founder of the collective was saxophonist, People's Artist Tofig Ahmadov.
In 1975, the ensemble was granted the status of a "variant-symphonic orchestra" and its composition was expanded. People's Artist of the USSR Muslim Magomayev performed with this orchestra for the first time at the Ostankino studio in Moscow.
Composer Aziz Akbar Azizli (1979-1983), pianist-composer Rafig Babayev (1983-1990), composer Faig Sujaddinov (1990-1998), pianist-composer Eldar Rzaguluzade (1998-2002), and saxophonist Akif Suleymanbeyli (2002-2012) led the orchestra. Since 2012, the orchestra's artistic director has been Vasif Akhundov, and its chief conductor is Javad Taghizade.
