Majid Shamkhalov was born in the city of Sarab in South Azerbaijan. Then he moved with his family to the village of Gulabli in Agdam, and in 1916 to Baku.
He studied at the Russian-Tatar school of Suleyman Sani Akhundov and the Azerbaijan State Theater Technical School (1924-1926).
He worked as an actor at the Azerbaijan Academic Drama Theater. He was awarded the "Gold Medal" for taking first place in the republican competition of young comedians. His first literary and public activity began with writing small-scale works during his directorship at the "Damga" Criticism-Propaganda Theater. His first work, "Landscape", was published in 1955. The play "Mother-in-law" on a household theme was first staged at the Kirovabad State Theater in 1957, and later played in more than a dozen theaters in Azerbaijan and the USSR, as well as in theaters in Bulgaria and Afghanistan, and was screened at the "Azerbaijanfilm" film studio.
Honored Artist (1949) Majid Shamkhalov died in 1984.
