Mahmud Karimov was born in Irevan.
He studied at the Faculty of Physics of Azerbaijan State University.
He worked as an engineer at the Institute of Physics, a research worker in the Radiation Research Sector, a scientific secretary, a laboratory manager, a director (1974-2001), the president of the Azerbaijan National Science Foundation (2002-2013), the editor-in-chief of the Azerbaijan National Encyclopedia (2004-2013), and the president of ANAS (2001-2013).
In 2001, he was elected a full member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
He served as the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Coordination Council of World Azerbaijanis.
He defended his doctoral dissertation in the specialty of semiconductor and dielectric physics.
He was awarded the Order of "Glory".
Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1989), Professor (2000) Mahmud Karimov died in a clinic in Turkey in 2013. He was buried in the 1st Alley of Honor.
