Jovdat Hajiyev (Ahmed-Jovdat Hajiyev) was born in the city of Sheki.

He studied at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1935-1938), the Moscow Conservatory (1938–1941), and later continued his studies, which were interrupted during the war years, and in 1947 he graduated from the class of composer Dmitry Shostakovich.

From 1947 until the end of his life, in addition to his composing activities, he taught at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory. For a while he was the rector of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1957-1969). As one of the founders of the musical symphony in Azerbaijan, he touched upon the important problems of the time in his symphonies and the symphonic poem "For Peace", reflecting them in a lyrical-dramatic style. The opera "Vatan" (Homeland), which he composed together with Gara Garayev, as well as chamber-instrumental and piano works, also occupy an important place in his work. In total, he is the author of eight symphonies.

Twice laureate of the USSR State Prize (1946, 1952), Honored Artist (1958), People's Artist (1960), Professor, laureate of the Order of "Glory" (1997) Jovdat Hajiyev died in 2002 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.

Composer Jovdat Hajiyev was the husband of the dancer Amina Dilbazi.
