Ismayil Hajibeyov was born in Baku.

He studied composition at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1972, in the class of Gara Garayev).

His works include an overture for symphony orchestra, string quartet, concertino for chamber orchestra, double concerto for violin, cello and orchestra, “Jangi” rhapsody for piano and orchestra, “Sketches in the Style of Watteau” for piano, “Memorial” cantata for mixed choir and orchestra, a suite based on Andersen’s fairy tales, “Nakhishlar” extravaganza, Concertschütze for flute and string orchestra, vocal works to the words of Dante, Friedrich von Hausen, Pushkin, Yesenin, Samad Vurgun. He is the author of the three-act opera “Firuza”.

From 1972 until the end of his life, he taught composition and polyphony at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (Baku Academy of Music).

Honored Artist (2000), laureate of the "Humay" award (1994) Ismayil Hajibeyov died in 2006 and was buried in the II Alley of Honor.

Composer Ismayil Hajibeyov is the son of composer Soltan Hajibeyov.
