Eyyub Giyas

Eyyub Giyas (Eyyub Abasov) was born in Lankaran. His family moved to the city of Sumgayit.

He studied at the Faculty of Theater Arts of the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts (1986-1990), and at the Higher Scriptwriting Course at the Moscow All-Union Institute of Cinematography (1991-1993, Yuri Arabov's class). He continued his education at the correspondence postgraduate course of the Institute of Architecture and Art of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.

He was the director of the People's Theater at the Palace of Culture of Chemists in Sumgayit (1988-1990), director of the "Cigirdash" youth center creative youth theater association (1990-1991), deputy editor-in-chief of the "168 hours" newspaper (1991-1992), editor of the "Khazar" magazine (1992-1993), director of the "Ziya" press distribution agency (1993-1997), founder and executive director of the "Inter-Press" press trading company in Sumgayit (1997-2012), editor-in-chief of the "Borderless Sea" magazine (2004), member of the editorial board of the magazines "Ulduz" (2004-2014), "Ulu çinar" (2011-2012), "Gobustan" (2014) and the AYB youth council (2004-2014). He worked as an editor at the Azerbaijan Translation Center and the "Khazar" magazine (2016-2017), and as an editor at the "Qanun" publishing house (2017).

He began his literary work in the 1990s. The books "I Carry a Slingshot That..." (poems), "Ant" (short stories and stories) were published (1996). The novel "Black Light" was awarded the "Novel of the Year" literary and cultural award (2004). He has published his literary translations in newspapers and magazines. He was awarded the Ali bey Huseynzade Prize (2016) for his translations from the "Nobel Laureates in Literature" series published in the "Adabiyyat" newspaper, and the "Golden Word" Prize for his translation of the novel "The Unwomanly Face of War" by Belarusian writer, Nobel Prize laureate Svetlana Alexievich (2017).
