Emil Aghayev was born in the city of Shymkent, Kazakhstan.

He studied at the Philology Faculty of Azerbaijan State University (1956-1961).

He taught at schools in the village of Pirabadil, Davachi district, and in the Gilgilchay settlement of Absheron district.

He has worked in the press since 1957. He was a literary worker at the Aztirajli newspaper of Azerbaijan State University, head of the culture, feuilleton and essay departments at the newspapers “Molodyoj Azerbaydzhana” and “Vyshka”, deputy executive secretary. He worked as a special correspondent for Azerbaijan of “Literaturnaya Gazeta” (1971-1989) and head of the Azerbaijan department of the APN (RIA “Novosti”) agency. He worked in the magazines "Yurd", "Qütb", "Populyar" (1987-1997), the chief advisor of the editorial and publishing department of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan (1994-1995), the independent advisor of the analytical and information agency "Caucasus" (Munich, Germany), the chairman of the essay and journalism council under the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan.

In his artistic work, along with essays, essays, and journalistic articles, he paid special attention to translating Azerbaijani literature into Russian. The first story he translated was published in the university's "Lenin Education" multi-circulation newspaper during his student years, and his first article was published in the "Azerbaijani Youth" newspaper.

Emil Aghayev, a laureate of the "Golden Pen" award, died in 2016.
