Ali Gafarov was born in Sinelnikovo, Dnepropetrovsk region, Ukraine. His family moved to Lankaran.

In 1954, he was admitted to the Philology Faculty of Azerbaijan State University. After graduating from the second year, he was sent to study at the Script Faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (1956).

Shortly after, he was accused of organizing a secret youth association with his fellow students, punished, and sent to Siberian camps (1956-1960).

After serving his sentence, he worked as a worker at the All-Union Hydropower Design Institute, the Angarsk geological expedition, and in the topographic and excavation teams of the USSR Ministry of Power Plant Construction (1960-1962).

Later, his stories "Siberia" were published in republican and all-Union periodicals.

After arriving in Baku, he was accepted as a literary worker at the "Bakinskiy rabochiy" newspaper (1962-1967).

In the late 1960s, he studied at the Higher Courses for Directors and Screenwriters in Moscow (Alexey Kapler's workshop).

Ali Gafarov died tragically in 1979, at the age of 44.

Writer Ali Gafarov is the brother of journalist Elmira Akhundova and actress and tv announcer Tamilla Gafarova.
