Javanshir Mammadov was born in Lankaran.

He studied at the Ashgabat Cinema Technical School (1937).

He worked at the Ashgabat film studio, rising to the ranks of cameraman student (1932), cameraman assistant, cameraman assistant (1934), II-class cameraman (1935), II-class cameraman (1938), and I-class cameraman for chronicle films. During the Second World War, he worked in the camera group of the Central Documentary Film Studio. He shot 12 documentary films at the Baku film studio (1950-1960). Since 1960, he has been one of the creators of the “Cinema Journey” almanac at the Central Scientific and Mass Film Studio (“Sentrnauchfilm”). He has shot more than a thousand plots for film magazines.

He was awarded the Cannes Film Festival (1954) for his cinematography in the film "The Epic of the Caspian Oilmen" and the Venice Film Festival (1959) for his cinematography in the film "In the Gulf Named After S.M. Kirov."

Winner of the Lenin Prize (1960), Honored Artist of Turkmenistan (1948) and Azerbaijan (1959), People's Artist (1982), Javanshir Mammadov died in Moscow in 1997.
