Alfi Gasimov was born in the village of Poladli in Aghdam.

He studied at the Aghdam Pedagogical Technical School, the two-year Teachers' Institute in Aghdam (1944-1946), and the journalism faculty of Azerbaijan State University (1946-1951).

He began his career as a teacher in the Khojavend and Boyad village schools in the Aghjabedi region (1943-1944). He worked as a special correspondent, department head and deputy editor in the "Azerbaijan Muallimi" newspaper (1951-1958), executive secretary of the "Literature and Art" newspaper (1958-1966), head of the publishing department and editor-in-chief in the State Committee for Printing, Publishing and Book Trade of the Azerbaijan SSR (1966-1983). From 1983 until the end of his life, he worked as the head of the fiction editorial office at the Azerbaijan State Publishing House. He was the host of the program "Kitablar alemi" on Azerbaijan State Television. He began his literary activity with poetry. His first poem "Xalq arzu" (People's Desire) was published in the newspaper "Lenin yolu" published in Aghdam in 1945. His first book of essays "At the Foot of Arimaz" was published in 1954. He is the author of the short stories and novels.

Alfi Gasimov died of heart failure in 1985.
