Rafig Guliyev

Rafig Guliyev was born in Baku.
He studied at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts, Faculty of Culture and Education, as a director of mass performances (1976-1981), and at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, Faculty of Cinematography, Moscow (1982-1987, workshop of V. Monakhov and V. Nakhabtsev).
He participated in the filming of several films in Russia as a cameraman: “Traitor” (1983), “First Role” (1984), “Bomb” (1985), “Daffodil Flowers” (1986), “The Vision of Young Mikhail” (1987, director Mikhail Kosyrev), “Russia” (1987, director Murad Ibrahimbeyov), “The Path” (1995, director Mikhail Kosyrev-Nesterov).
Since 1974, he has worked as an assistant cameraman, second cameraman, cameraman, and director at the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio. While continuing his creative activity at the film studio, he worked as the head of television at the Azerbaijani representation of the Turkish Samanyolu TV channel (1999-2001). He created the “Azerbaijan” editorial office at Lider TV. He organized the production of 237 films in the organization he headed. He participated in the competition programs of international festivals, received awards, and was a member and chairman of the jury. He worked as a director, operator and scriptwriter on more than 20 feature films and about 40 documentaries.
Since 1997, he has been engaged in pedagogical activities at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Art. After defending his candidate dissertation on the topic “The Visual Heritage of Azerbaijani Silent Cinema”, he received the scientific degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Art History (2008), is an associate professor (2005), and professor (2016). He was the head of the Department of Cinema and Television Arts (2015-2023). He is the author of dozens of scientific articles, curriculum and methodological instructions, textbooks and textbooks.

Cinematographer Rafig Guliyev is the father of cinematographer Jeyhun Guliyev.
