Nazim Rzayev was born in Baku.
He studied violin at the Moscow State Conservatory named after P. Tchaikovsky (1951, Marina Kozolunova's class).
He began his career as a violinist at the Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theater (1958), and then continued his career as a conductor (1958-1960). He interned at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow (1961-1963). In 1964, he was appointed artistic director and chief conductor of the newly established Azerbaijani Television and Radio Chamber Orchestra. In 1978, he began leading the Gara Garayev State Chamber Orchestra.
Since 1952, he has worked at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory, and since 1992, in various collectives and educational institutions in Turkey.
Nazim Rzayev, laureate of the State Prizes of the USSR (1980) and Azerbaijan (1974), professor (1985), Honored Artist (1958), People's Artist (1977), died in 2006 in the Turkish city of Eskişehir.
