Jamil Farajov was born in Baku.
He studied at the oil and mining faculty of the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry (1969), and at the television directing faculty of the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography (1969-1974).
Since 1970, he has been working as a director at the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio. He has directed dozens of documentaries, more than 30 feature and documentary plots for the satirical film magazine “Mozalan”, and chronicle film magazines. For a while, he worked as a member of the Central Election Commission (1990-1995). He worked as the artistic director and director of the “Yaddash” documentary film studio (1997-2002), head of the Main Department of Cinematography of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2002-2006), and sector head of the Cinematography Department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (2006-2012). He was the secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of Azerbaijan.
Honored Artist (1989) Jamil Farajov died in 2023 and was buried in the "Gurd gapisi" cemetery.
