Jahangir Gahramanov was born in Gabala.
He studied Persian language and literature at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Azerbaijan State University (1945-1950), and postgraduate studies at the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (1951-1955).
He defended his candidate's dissertation on the topic "Philosophical terms in the Azerbaijani literary language" (1955), and his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Critical text and lexicon of the works of Imadaddin Nasimi" (1969). He worked as a senior lecturer and associate professor at the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Russian Language and Literature (1955-1960). Since 1960, he continued his activities at the Republican Manuscripts Fund of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, where he was a senior research fellow (1960-1967), head of the Department of Research and Publication of Written Monuments (1967-1971), deputy director (1971-1972), director (1972-1995). He delivered reports at congresses, meetings, and conferences held in Baku in various countries. He was on a scientific mission to Uppsala University in Sweden (1978), and to the Vatican Apostolic Library in Italy. He was a member of specialized defense councils awarding the degrees of candidate and doctor of philological sciences at the Institutes of Oriental Studies, Linguistics, and Literature of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences (1975-1995), chairman of the defense council in the specialty of textual studies at the Institute of Manuscripts, and a member of the defense council awarding the degree of candidate of theological sciences. He was a member of the editorial boards of the publications of the USSR Academy of Sciences from the series “Monuments of the Writings of the East”, the journal “Soviet Turkology”, the newspaper “Literature and Art” and the journal “Archives of Azerbaijan” and the series of the philology and art series of the abstract foreign literature collection of the Scientific Information Center for Social Sciences of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. He worked as the editor-in-chief of the catalogs of the Institute of Manuscripts of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, the collection of scientific works “In the Treasury of Manuscripts” and the bulletin “Voices from Our Past”.
He was awarded the Honorary Decree of the municipal administration of the city of Detroit, USA, and the bronze medal of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of the USSR.
Doctor of Sciences (1969), Professor (1974), Honored Scientist (1982) Jahangir Gahramanov died in 1995.
