Uzeyir Hajibeyov (Uzeyir Hajibeyli) was born in Agjabadi.
He received his primary education in Shusha. He studied at the Gori Teachers' Seminary (1899-1904), the music courses of the Philharmonic Society (Moscow), and the Petersburg Conservatory.
He began his artistic career with journalism. He entered the history of Azerbaijani musical culture as the founder of national opera and professional music. He laid the foundation of opera art in the East with "Leyli and Majnun" (1908). He wrote the mugham operas "Asli and Kerem", "Shah Abbas and Khurshidbanu". The opera "Koroglu", which is considered the pinnacle of his work, has not left the stage since 1937. He is also the creator of the musical comedy genre in Azerbaijan. The musical comedies “Arshin mal alan” and “O olmasin, bu olsun” were successfully performed on the stages of opera houses in many countries of the world.
He was the chairman of the Azerbaijan Composers' Union (1938-1948), the rector of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1928-1929, 1939-1948), the director of the Institute of Arts of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences (1945-1948).
Academician of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences (1945), professor (1940), laureate of the USSR State Prize, People's Artist of the USSR (1938) Uzeyir Hajibeyov died in 1948 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.
Composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov is the brother of composer Zulfugar Hajibeyov.
