Svetlana Ismayilova (Svetlana Rahimgizi) was born in Baku.

She studied at the Faculty of Journalism of Azerbaijan State University (1960).

Since 1957, she has regularly appeared in the press. The main topic of her writings was film music. She is a doctoral candidate in cinema art at the Institute of Architecture and Art of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences (1963), worked as a literary worker and department head at the “Azerbaijani Zhanli” newspaper, and as a scientific editor of the Art Department of the editorial office of the Azerbaijan Soviet Encyclopedia. She was the leading editor of the “Azerbaijanfilm” film studio (1984-2001). She worked as a scriptwriter and editor in documentary, feature and animated films, including the Mozalan film magazine. She is a translator of about 70 films from Russian into Azerbaijani, and the author of the books “Art is eternal and immortal”, “My plane tree was mine”, “There was time…”.

She taught at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Art.

She is a laureate of the "Hasan bey Zardabi" (1998) and "Golden Pen" (1990) awards. She was awarded the "Arif Babayev Honorary Diploma" (2002).

She has lived in Düsseldorf, Germany, since 2004.

Svetlana Ismayilova died in Germany in 2022.
