Sharif Gurbanaliyev was born in Baku. He studied at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts (1980-1984), and the Higher Television Directors' Course (1990-1991).

Since 1988, he has worked at Azerbaijan Television, and later at Space TV. For a while, he headed the “Sabah” Creative Union of Azerbaijan Television.

He teaches at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts.
