Oruj Shahmammadov was born in Lankaran.
He studied at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute (1984).
He has worked at the "Azerbaijanfilm" film studio since 1979, and has headed the lighting department since 1981.
He was awarded the "Taraggi" (Progress) medal (2018).
