Mustafa Mardanov was born in the city of Marand in South Azerbaijan. As a child, he moved to Tbilisi with his family and lived there until 1924.

He studied at the Tbilisi Boys' Gymnasium (1916) and the Moscow State Institute of Theater Arts (1922-1924, GITIS).

He first appeared on stage in 1909 at the Zubalov People's Theater in performances staged by the Muslim drama circle. He performed in the role of Seyfulla in the play "Khor-khor" for the second time. He was invited to the Tbilisi Azerbaijan Theater. Since 1910, he began to participate in performances of the Tbilisi Azerbaijan Theater. He was the director of the Tbilisi Azerbaijan Theater (1921-1922). From 1924 until the end of his life, he worked at the Azerbaijan State Drama Theater. He collaborated with this organization from the first days of the Baku city radio broadcasting studio. At first, he worked as a director, then as a text reader and radio theater performer. He was the chairman of the Union of Theater Workers (1962-1968). He played the role of a bailiff in the film “Abrek Zaur” (1926, 1938, directed by Boris Mikhin) made by Russian film producers. His books “50 Years on the Azerbaijani Stage: My Memories” (1959), “My Contemporaries” (1973) were published.

Honored Artist (1935), People's Artist (1943) Mustafa Mardanov died in 1968 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.

Actor Mustafa Mardanov is the brother of director Samad Mardanov.
