Muslum Magomayev was born in Baku.

He studied at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1968).

At the age of 19, he began to gain fame with successful performances at the Helsinki Youth Festival and the Days of Azerbaijani Culture held in Moscow in 1963. In the 1960s, he was a soloist of the Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theater, and interned at the La Scala Theater in Milan, Italy. In 1966, he gave his first concert at the Olympia Concert Hall in Paris. In 1969, he received his first prize at the International Song Festival held in Sopot (Poland).

In 1975, he was appointed artistic director of the Azerbaijan State Variety-Symphonic Orchestra.

He has been active in Moscow since the 1970s.

In 1997, the Russian Astronautical Society named two stars after him and his wife Tamara Sinyavskaya.

He was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan and was awarded a number of orders and medals. Honored Artist (1964), People's Artist of Azerbaijan (1971) and USSR (1973), laureate of the Order of "Glory" (1997), Order of "Independence" (2002) Muslim Magomayev died in Moscow in 2008 and was buried in the Alley of Honor in Baku.
