Mirza Babayev was born in the Mashtaga village of Baku.
He studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Baku Industrial Institute (1939), and at the Vocal Department of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory (1953, Bulbul's class).
He worked for many years at the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic. He was one of the first soloists of the Azerbaijan State Jazz Orchestra. More than 500 songs by Azerbaijani composers became popular in his performance.
He starred in the films “The Last Gaiduk” (1972, in the role of a prince, directed by Valeriu Gajiu / Moldova), “The Magic Voice of Celsomino” (1977, in the role of the prison chief, directed by Tamara Lisichian / Ukraine) made by foreign film producers.
Mirza Babayev, a two-time winner of the "Humay" award, a laureate of the "Shohrat" order (2002), Honored Artist (1956), People's Artist (1992), died in 2003 and was buried in the Second Alley of Honor.
