Jafar Giyasi was born in the village of Husna in the city of Ardabil.

He studied at the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Construction of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute (1961-1966), and at the full-time postgraduate course of the Institute of Architecture and Art of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR (1972-1978).

He worked as an architect, chief architect, group leader at the Azerbaijani branch of the All-Union Institute for Resort Design (1967-1971), and director of the Scientific Research Project Institute for the Restoration of Monuments (1993). For a long time, he was the scriptwriter and host of the programs “Near and Far Away” and “Architectural Horizons” on the Azerbaijan State Television. 15 buildings and monuments were built based on his projects. The objects “Nakhchivan Tombs”, “Gobustan Reserve”, and “Surakhani Fire Place” prepared under his scientific leadership were submitted to UNESCO for inclusion in the World Heritage List. He defended his PhD thesis on the topic “Tabriz School of Architecture” (13th-17th centuries) (1978), and his PhD thesis on the topic “Architect Khaja Alisah Tabrizi (period and creativity)” (1997). He is the author of more than 250 scientific articles. He taught at the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction for a long time. He is a Doctor of Architecture, Corresponding Member of ANAS (2001), Professor (2007), and a full member of the International Academy of Architecture of the Eastern Countries (1999).
