Habib Ismayilov was born in Nakhchivan. Due to financial difficulties, his family moved to Tbilisi in 1910.

While living in Tbilisi, he worked as an assistant proofreader in the Yeni fikir newspaper. He also performed children's roles on the stage of the Azerbaijan Theater in Tbilisi. After a while, they moved to Baku. He studied at the Moscow State Institute of Theater Arts, Faculty of Directing and Acting (1931, GITIS) and postgraduate studies in Theater Studies (1954, GITIS). He worked as an artistic director, director and chief director in the Baku, Ganja, and Makhachkala Theaters (1931-1943). In 1938, he was appointed chief director of the Musical Comedy Theater. He was engaged in pedagogical activities in acting at the Baku Conservatory and Theater Technical School (1940-1941). Since 1943, he has been working in cinema. In 1943, he was appointed head of the newsreel department at the Baku Film Studio. He worked as a director at Mosfilm for a while (1949-1950). Since 1946, he has also worked as a dubbing director.
