Bulbul (Murtuza Mammadov) was born in the village of Khanbagi near Shusha.

He studied at the Baku Conservatory (1927), and through the state at the Milan Conservatory in Italy (1931, class of Delliponti and R. Grani).

He was given the name "Bulbul" from an early age for his skillful playing. His first appearance on the theater stage is connected with the opera "Seyfalmulk" (Mashadi Jamil Amirov), staged in Ganja (1916). Since 1920, he has been a soloist of the opera troupe of the United State Theater (since 1924, the theater was called the Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theater). He taught at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory. In 1932, on his initiative, a scientific research cabinet was created under the Azerbaijan State Conservatory to study Azerbaijani folk music. He is the author of many works on the study of the traditions of the Azerbaijani national vocal school, the synthesis of these traditions with Russian and European opera culture.

Bulbul, the founder of the Azerbaijani professional vocal school, researcher of musical folklore, professor (1940), People's Artist of the USSR (1938), laureate of the USSR State Prize (1950), laureate of the Italian Garibaldi Order, died in 1961 and was buried in the Alley of Honor.

Singer Bulbul is the father of composer Polad Bulbuloghlu.
