Aghakhan Aghabayli

Aghakhan Aghabayli was born in the village of Kur Garagashli in Salyan.
He studied at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute.
He worked as the director of the Salyan vocational school in the system of the collective farm center of the People's Land Committee (1927-1929), an agronomist-zootechnician in Baku and Sheki (1929-1930). During his studies, he worked as a clerk in the investigation department of the people's court and a business manager in the social security department of the city of Salyan, and as a teacher in the cities of Baku and Salyan (1920-1927). As a student, he was sent to the All-Union Institute of Hybridization and Acclimatization in Ukraine to study the history of breeding English meat sheep breeds, to the Askania-Nova Hybridization Institute to study wool and meat productivity, and to Moscow and Leningrad to engage in scientific research under the leadership of Professor N. Potemkin (1925-1926). He studied at the postgraduate course of the Moscow All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Animal Husbandry in the specialty "Genetics and Selection of Bighorn Cattle" and conducted research on the topic "Lezgi sheep and the results of their crossing with Meronoses" (1930-1932). In addition to heading the "Animal Breeding and Genetics" department of the AzKTI for 36 years, he worked as the head of the "Zoology and Darwinism" department, a senior researcher at the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Animal Husbandry (1932-1946), and the dean of the zootechnics faculty of the AzKTI (1932-1996). Since 1966, he has headed the "Animal Genetics and Selection" department at the Institute of Genetics and Selection of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
He is considered the founder of buffalo breeding in Azerbaijan.
