Alexander Kalyagin was born in Malmyzh, Kirov Oblast, Russia.
He studied at the Boris Shchukin Theater School (1965).
He worked as an actor at the Moscow Drama Theater, the Yermoloyev Theater, and the Anton Chekhov Moscow Art Theater (1971), and as an artistic director at the Et cetera Moscow Theater (1993). Later, he worked as a film actor and film director.
He was awarded the USSR State Prize for his role in the film "Investigation" (1981). He is a People's Artist of Russia (1983).
